Have you ever wondered which movie you should see next? Do you want to have what it takes to call yourself a cinema conaisseur? Or do you just want to impress your friends with the most mindblowing movies in the industry? Then embark with us on the journey through the 10 movies that will definitely blow your mind!
10. Gone Girl
This one surely has a crazy protagonist! Rosamund Pike takes us by surprise with her psycho abilities and to be honest, she would be capable of scaring pretty much anyone. Have you seen her in Massive Attack’s music video for Voodoo in my blood? WATCH IT BELOW, she kills it just as much as in the movie. Also, it is directed by David Fincher, so you should expect it to be intense!
9. Mullholand Drive
David Lynch surely has a taste for the bizzare, and even more so, for dreamy movies. This film is so hard to understand that it definitely takes a few reads on reddit to go through its layers. The visuals are fantastic, definitely worth of a ‚dream’ and the plots in Lynch’s movies are twisted and worth thinking at. (Any shout out to Lost Highway? Ah, that should have been on this list, too!) But don’t be scared, it is worthwhile watching even if you don’t care about these things, this director is THAT good.
8. Trainspotting
=
Screened after Irvine Welsh’s novel, this is an amazing portrayal of the life as a heroin addict in Edinburgh – also showing the poverty of sub-urban areas, unfiltered. It is definitely made for the strong-hearted, as It’s filled with the harsh realities of addiction and also the difficulty in moving out of it. Besides, some scenes are especially difficult to watch because of their dramatic implications and also visual impact. And one of the most worrying points of the film is the way an addiction can follow you even when you are clean and sober – just watch it.
7. The Machinist
Ever wondered what would happen to you if you wouldn’t sleep for, let’s say, a couple of months? This movie completely describes the troubled life of an insomniac and since Christian Bale is starring, you should definitely watch it. By the way, can you even compare the body of Batman in the whole trilogy and the one of the protagonist in this movie? YES, CHRISTIAN BALE REALLY DID THIS WITH HIS BODY. Anyway, coming back to serious issues, the story of Trevor Reznik is very concerning, as he goes on a downward spiral after a work accident caused by his lack of sleep. It is quite raw in terms of imagery, so consider yourselves warned.
6. Mr. Nobody
This one was my personal favourite for quite some time. I know you’ve all recently seen Jared Leto playing crazy as Joker in Suicide Squad but did you know he played in this movie too? And he actually plays multiple narratives (yeah, just to confuse you a bit). Life is always about making decisions and once you’ve started on a path you can never go back – and this movie is showing just that. What will happen if you go left instead of right? If you take that train or you don’t? What if you can just not choose? All these questions are quite artfully addressed in this heart-wrenching, warm, beautiful and mind blowing movie.
5. Memento
This one is directed by Christopher Nolan (who also did the Batman trilogy, Prestige and many other breath takers, like Interstellar) and it’s no surprise that it is absolutely fantastic. Guy Pearce plays the role of an amnesic man and his story is presented through 2 types of sequences: a black and white series running chronologically and a coloured series that is reversed (no wonder this movie got Nolan famous), both which combine in order to create the whole narrative. While the movie requires a lot of focus from its viewers, it is engaging to say the least. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m definitely re-watching this.
4. Predestination
You would think that time travelling is pretty straightforward, right? Like, you know, you go to the past to see yourself playing football as a kid and then to the future to see yourself getting old and wrinkled? Well, it surely doesn’t work like that in this movie, because each action has unpredictable consequences and you end up dealing with weird situations. And as a time travelling agent, keeping a journal is mandatory. Sounds vague? Yeah, I know, that’s why you have to watch it. Spoiler: The plot twist comes at the end of the movie *wink*
By the way, have you seen Before Sunrise? Ethan Hawke plays in that too and if you’re in for some nice romance, it is quite worth it.
3. Donnie Darko
Jake Gyllenhaal is really sought out when it comes to playing intricate characters isn’t he? While you might have known him from Brokeback Mountain, where he played alongside Heath Ledger (rest in peace), his history of complicated characters started off with Donnie Darko, where he plays a troubled teenager struggling with his weird visions. How do you cope with knowing that your world is about to end? That you’re about to die? But more importantly, how can you distinguish visions from reality? This movie surely doesn’t give clear answers, which makes it even more intriguing to watch. Oh and by the way, his sister in the movie is also his real sister!
2. Inception
You surely heard about Inception a couple of times before, right? Well, if you haven’t watched it, I guess it’s about time! Directed by the amazing Christopher Nolan (wooh, 2 times in this top already) and with actors like Leonardo diCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Lewitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, this movie was bound to be a success. If you’ve ever wondered how entering dreams must be like, now you have your answer and you should also be prepared for the responsibility which comes with such power. I know this one was Superman’s saying, but let’s slip this for now. Inception provides a whole lot of suspense for the viewer and the scenes are just fantastic in terms of special effects. Basically, the movie of your dreams! (You’ll get it once you’ll see it)
1. Fight Club
Possibly one of the most renowned movies of all time, the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel is certainly a movie you can’t miss. While it wasn’t as popular when it was first released duet o the violence and not so moral behaviours of the characters, it became a cult movie with time an dis currently considered one of the greatest films in the cinema industry. Starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter as Tyler Durden, the narrator (which is unnamed) and Marla Singer, the movie captures the initiation of a „fight club” by the main protagonist and its development throughout time, closely related to the character’s development. There is much more to tell, but I will stop here. First rule: We do not talk about the fight club.
P.S. Did you know that the first and last movie of this list are directed by David Fincher?
