Have you ever considered what the most dangerous roads are? You won’t need to bother about dangerous roads if you are living in a developed city and aren’t that much of a travel adventurer. But, for the love of fun (and knowledge), here are the top most dangerous roads in the world.
Spoiler alert: You may need to say your last prayers before driving through some of these roads.
1. Zoji La, India
Zoji La is located between the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a 5.5 miles long mountain pass. Not only cars pass through this road, it’s usually common to see a herd of livestock plying the road. Whenever this happens, road users always have to wait for the livestock to pass before moving because the road is extremely narrow, and you could easily fall into the valley.
2. Transfagarasan, Romania
While this is an extremely dangerous road, it stands out today as one of the most visited tourist attractions in Romania. The road even appeared on BBC’s Top Gear in 2009. The name “Transfagarasan” means over or across Fagaras – which is a mountain in Romania. Transfagarsan is over 15O KM long and reaches an altitude of 6,699 ft.
3. Dalton Highway Alaska
Dalton highway is the snowiest highway in the world because it is not traveled often and it’s hardly plowed. The highway connects more than three villages and it is extremely lonely. If your car ever breaks down while traveling this road, and if you don’t have a charged cell phone, you may be there for weeks without getting any help. If, for any reason, you have to travel this road, be sure to take along with you, a fully charged cell phone, enough supplies, and good snow tires.
4. Khardung La, India
This road has been recognized by the national geographic and Guinness book of world records as one of the most dangerous highways in the world. Climbing to an altitude of 18,379 feet, this road is the highest road pass in the world. Because of its dangerous height, it is not used often. In fact, only the most daring travelers use this road.
5. Yungas Road, Bolivia
Yungas road is extremely dangerous because, apart from being wickedly narrow, it is bordered by a mountain on one side and a cliff on the other side. It’s not difficult to see why 200-300 people die annually from traveling this road. The mystery question still remains why people would choose to continue using this road even after the thousands of lives it has claimed.
6. Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway
This road is constructed across the Atlantic Ocean, which is how it got its name. The Atlantic Ocean Road is a major tourist attraction in Norway, but it can get dangerous when the tides go up. During high tide, the waves do sweep across the road and are able to push vehicles into the Atlantic Ocean. If you have to use this road, ensure you travel it only when the tide is low.
7. Guoliang Tunnel Road, China
This road was built by the locals as a way to get into the remote villages. It connects several different tunnels, which are the only security you have when traveling this road.
8. Le Passage du Gois, France
This road is a pavement inside water. It is only passable during specific times of the day, after which it is closed. The time at which the road is closed is when the tides rise to cover the entire road, hence it’s never advisable to travel the road at this time because your chances of not sinking are extremely slim.
9.Tianmen Mountain Road, China
What makes this road dangerous is the 99 narrow turns it has. As you move up the road, each turn gets even more dangerous than the last – and this is beside the fact that you are moving up in height. By the time you get to the peak of this road, you would be 3,300 feet above the ground. Tianmen mountain road is located in Tianman mountains, China. It is about 6 miles long.
10. Hana Hawaii
Hawaii has beautiful tropical vegetation. It is undoubtedly one of the most visited places in the world, but it does have it’s dangerous areas. One of which is the Hana road. This road is dangerously narrow, and landslides are common along this area, making it even more dangerous.
